Over-the-phone interpreting (OPI) connects your staff and a limited-English speaker to a professional interpreter in seconds, by phone, with no scheduling and no travel. It is the workhorse of language access for clinics, courts, call centers, and government offices. But providers vary widely. Here is what to evaluate before you sign with one.

What OPI is good for

OPI shines for unscheduled, short, or unpredictable encounters: a patient who arrives speaking Amharic, a caller who switches to Spanish, an intake that needs Haitian Creole right now. For longer or more visual encounters, video remote interpreting (VRI) or on-site interpreters may fit better, so a good partner offers all three and helps you pick the right modality.

What to evaluate

  • Connection speed. The number that matters is average time to connect. Seconds, not minutes. Ask for it, and ask what happens for rare languages.
  • Language coverage. Common languages are easy. Your real test is the long tail, the rare and Indigenous languages your community actually speaks.
  • Interpreter quality. Are interpreters trained and qualified for your setting? Medical interpreting, for example, should meet the 40-hour CCHI and NBCMI standard. Ask how interpreters are vetted and how quality is monitored.
  • Security and compliance. For healthcare, confirm HIPAA-compliant handling. For any sensitive work, ask about confidentiality agreements and data protection.
  • Reporting and billing. Clear usage reporting and predictable billing help you manage cost and prove compliance.

Red flags

Watch for vague answers on connect times, no data on rare-language availability, interpreters who are not trained for your setting, and pricing that hides per-minute minimums or connection fees. If a provider cannot tell you how they measure quality, that is your answer.
